Registered Massage Therapy

What is Registered Massage Therapy (RMT)

Massage Therapy is one of the oldest methods of healing. The practice of Massage Therapy includes the assessment, treatment and prevention of soft tissue and joint disorders. RMT’s use various treatment methods such as manipulation, hydrotherapy (heat or ice), mobilization and therapeutic exercise to relieve pain, rehabilitate and restore health. You can expect your appointment with the RMT to include intake, assessment, treatment, reassessment and therapeutic exercise.

All our RMT’s are members of the College of Massage Therapists of British Columbia (CMTBC). RMT’s honour a strict code of ethics set by the CMTBC, which ensure that patients receive safe, competent and ethical care. Patient trust and confidentiality is respected at all times.

What kind of massage therapy is right for you?

Some of the specific techniques our RMT’s have training in include:

  • Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) using light pressure techniques, and the movement of cerebrospinal fluid; this therapy can assess and treat soft tissue and joint restrictions in the cranium and around the spinal cord. CST techniques can also help by decompressing cranial and spinal nerves

  • Visceral Manipulation

Visceral Manipulation is a manual therapy technique which consists of gentle pressure to encourage mobility, tone and motion of the organs, connective tissue and other areas of the body where physiological motion has been impaired.

  • Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) and Trigger Point therapy

Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) and Trigger Point therapy - These techniques utilize static pressure on specific points in order to relieve pain. Trigger points are highly irritable points in muscles which can refer pain locally or to other points in the body. NMT and trigger point therapy are also often used to alleviate nerve compression and entrapment.

  • Myofascial release

Myofascial release - Fascia is a dense, tough tissue that surrounds and covers all muscles. Myofascial release involves applying sustained pressure into the myofascial connective tissue restrictions with the goal of eliminating pain and to restore motion. This type of treatment often uses little or no oil to eliminate glide on the skin.

  • Joint mobilization

Joint mobilization is a type of passive joint movement where the goal of treatment is to reduce pain and to restore range of motion.

  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle technique that encourages the movement of lymphatic fluids around the body and removes waste and toxins from tissues. MLD can benefit people with lymphedema, fibromyalgia, as well as post injury and surgical swelling. MLD is an especially useful technique after mastectomy’s.

  • Muscle Energy Technique

Muscle Energy Technique is a form of soft tissue treatment which uses gentle muscle contractions to stretch or release restricted tissues.
